There Is No Greater Love

I love you are the three words that gets our faces flushed, palms sweaty, and our heart rates up with the excitement from the endorphins that kick in and butterflies in our stomach. Think back to your first kiss :)

Once born, the words from our Mother, "I love you" as she proudly displays affection, caring for you for nine months in the womb that led to the glorious moment of birth. The delight, the love and adoration.

As an adult I can reflect on and feel so proud of the love we felt in our home while I was growing up with my Mom and Dad as such role models. Married fifty-six years, raising four children, my father always displayed respect for my mother as they provided for the family.  These are characteristics that I don't take for granted, however that commitment was our father showing his love for his family.
Dad brought Mom flowers, cherished his Love with gifts from chocolates to mink coats and nice jewelry-- the fine things in life. However just spending time on the trips, and many cruises are cherished memories that tell a story.  I'm so grateful for the many photo albums Mom so meticulously organized to go down memory lane for the captured moments thanks to the technology of video and photographs.

Hart and I are now married thirty-seven years this year.  In raising our two children, Grace and Trey, we built upon the foundation our parents laid out for us. Hart also affectionately shows his love, not just with flowers, which I love in the kitchen, foyer or bath, does the little things like making sure I don't run out of my favorite bottle of water, Fiji, or filing my car up with gas (something I just don't like to do). Then the daily call on his way home, to ask, "Can I get you anything? What would you like for dinner, I don't want you to cook I know you've had a long day," or "What would you like to do?"

Again, thoughtfulness, respect and caring goes along way!  That love language is key and can far outweigh the material things like trips, cars, and jewelry. These are things which we initially enjoy, but we soon realize it's the intangible that weighs more than the tangible when it's all said and done.

Now the greatest gift is when our Lord and Savior died for you and me. There is no greater gift than the commandment to Love one Another, love as I have loved you so you must love another  John 13:34

What the world needs now is love sweet love! Love for our fellow man, love for our country. With the genuine heart to love there is no room for hate; respect must replace that negativity. May our youth choose not to bully, sports be played with respect, and unity and camaraderie exist in the work place. The trickle down effect can create a generation that is cohesive, not divided. It can and must start with the heart to love One Another!

This is my first blog honoring my Mother who was also my best friend. When we were together mom would introduce us as Marcy 1 and Marcy 2. This is my 2016 Valentine sharing an artist view perspective of my mothers garden and how she began her journey of oil painting. The rose was her favorite subject, hence her rose garden, note the 7 paintings below.

The rose is one of the most enduring symbols of love and appreciation. We gave Mom 56 roses, honoring her and my father, the late Dr. John Madison on July 26, 2007 two months before their 56th wedding anniversary (picture above right).

Each color has it's own significance.

Red: Ultimate symbol of passion
Pink: Conveying thoughtfulness, multiple occasions
Dark pink: Expression of gratitude or say thank you
Med pink: First love, congratulate someone or cheer up
Light pink: Gentleness and admiration
White: Traditionally thought new beginnings with marriage. The perfect way to say I am thinking of you.
Orange: The energy of this beauty equates with enthusiasm and gratitude displaying oomph and elegance.
Yellow: Depicts joy and friendship their warm and sunny disposition will brighten anyone's day

No matter the occasion, send the sentiment in your heart.

Consider the uses of roses for:

Homemade Rose oil
Rose petal potpourri
Homemade Rose water
Rose cocktails
Relaxing Rose petal bath
Homemade rose petal paper for cards and stationary

To make cut roses last longer:
  • Strip any leaves that sit below the water line in the vase
  • Trim  stems cut @ 45 degree angle
  • Clean vase
  • Fill vase with lukewarm water mix in packet of preservative typically comes with roses. To make own: 1 tsp of sugar, 1 tsp of bleach and 2 tsp of lemon juice
  • Add roses
  • Keep flowers cool. Away from direct heat, and direct sunlight which can cause roses to wilt.
  • Change water after 4 days. Refill, trim stems and add more preservative
Enjoy!

Mom chose oil painting as a hobby once she retired as a registered nurse for 40 years. Mom trained under Jim Todd for ten years. As an artist one tends to paint their passion, for mom she loved gardening. Over the years the fresh strawberries, fresh mint, her purple clematis up the trellis are vivid memories. Annually I recall her saying " Wait until Mother's Day before planting, even if we are seeing signs of good weather just in case another frost occurs, you will be ok."  I also remember she would say "Never water at night, it's like going to bed with wet socks on you feet :)"

Knockout roses were Mom's favorite. To learn how to plant and care for rose bushes seek your neighborhood nursery. Greenscape Gardens And Gifts located at Dougherty Ferry And Barrett Station Rd in STL is a resource I welcome and suggest.

The paintings below are those from mom's view. The value, light, hues and composition truly expresses her love for roses.
